Glorious Surprises

Having been here for just over 2 months, we are enjoying all the different aspects of life in the wet tropics.

We've been lucky enough to have seen the Cape Trib Cassowary on the Camp's driveway again a few times with his young chick. So do yourself a favor and drive slowly. You may just see him just off the side of the drive, or crossing it!

Even though it should be the dry season we have been getting a lot of rain, which keeps the little creeks flowing, making for sensational photos. The temperature is pleasant to match a northern winter, some you see with jumpers and jackets on, early and late, but being southerners we have not been anywhere near cold enough for that.

The beach and its tides, and ebbs and flows, the exposed reefs at low tides are always different. You can see colored coral and little reef fish. The trick is to stand still after they've all scurried into hiding places, they come out again to be enjoyed. Little octopus squirt you with a cheeky attitude of you being in their domain.

Some trees are starting to flower in the magnificent forest, different exotic fruits are starting to appear for sale at roadside stalls. I have particularly enjoyed the Soursop, a large fruit and unfortunate name for a fruit that has a yummy lemon taste. We've tried the Chocolate Pudding fruit, which looks very much like a persimmon, but dark green with chocolate brown flesh- though it doesn’t taste like chocolate at all! Sheeeesh!

As usual, just ask the wonderful girls at the office and they'll point you in the right direction and give help to find all the delights of this magnificent world heritage area.

Oh! The Sandbar is now selling freshly made European bread on Sundays and they are Yummo......

We are off to check out the Markets down at Cow Bay tomorrow, they have them the 4th Saturday of the month, heard on the grapevine that there'll be fresh seafood off the boat from Bloomfield.......mmm.

See you next week!
